Your Questions Answered

  • In order to proceed with your test, you need to ensure your vehicle has:

    1. Valid registration and insurance

    2. Properly inflated tires

    3. Working mirrors and lights

    4. A windshield free of cracks or debris.

    5. At least half a tank of gas.

We always recommend practicing with the same vehicle you'll use for your test so you are familiar with its size and handling.

    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence.

    • Your Social Security number.

    • Two proofs of Tennessee residency (one within the last four months).

Note: If you're under 18, bring proof of school attendance, a teenage affidavit, and your certification of 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice.

  • Yes, parallel parking is a required element of the Tennessee driving test. Depending on your chosen DSC, this may be performed on the road, or in a parking lot between cones.

  • Yes, the use of backup cameras is allowed, however you must prove to the examiner that you are not solely relying on it when backing up. Show good observational skills and situational awareness by looking around regularly.

  • This is allowed unless signage prohibits it. As always, you will need to stop completely, yield to other road users and only turn when the road is clear and safe to do so. Optionally you have the right to wait until the light is green.

  • Yes, you need to signal any time you turn or move the vehicle sideways, whether it's when moving forward or reverse.

  • If the upcoming light turns yellow and you are in the position to safely do so, you must bring the vehicle to a stop. Before applying the brakes, check in your mirror to see if there is a vehicle tailgating.

  • If you see an emergency vehicle with activated lights and sirens, you must come to a stop and pull over to the shoulder of the road as soon as safely possible. If you're stopped at an intersection, it's often best to let the emergency vehicle navigate around you.

  • We recommend studying the Tennessee Driver's Handbook thoroughly, and taking online practice tests to familiarize yourself with the question format. You will need to answer 24/30 questions correctly to pass (80% pass level).

Further Tennessee Driving Test Information

Driving tests are conducted at Driver Services Centers, which are operated by the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security (TDOSHS).

Note that not all Driver Services Centers offer road tests, so it's important to check in advance. Some locations offer on-site test courses, while others conduct tests on the roads surrounding the center.

Services Offered at DSCs:

  • Written Knowledge Test – Required for first-time permit holders.

  • Road Skills Test – The practical driving test for obtaining a full license.

  • Learner’s Permits & Graduated Licenses – For new and teen drivers.

  • Driver’s License Renewals & Duplicates – For existing license holders.

  • Vehicle Registration & Title Services – Available at select locations.

The TN Graduated Driver License Program (GDL)

To help new drivers gain experience under less risky conditions, Tennessee employs a GDL program in three phases:

  1. Learner Permit: Available from age 15 once your written knowledge exam and vision screening are passed. You need to hold this permit for a minimum of 180 days.

  2. Intermediate Restricted License: Available from age 16 (after 180 days of Learner Permit) and passing your road skills test. This requires 50 hours driving experience, with 10 hours at night.

  3. Intermediate Unrestricted License: Available from age 17 (after 1 year of Intermediate Restricted License) and without having accumulated more than six points on your driving record.

Road Skills Test Components

  • Reverse Two-Point Parking: Backing into a space after driving past it.

  • Observing Right-of-Way: Yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles.

  • Stopping Quickly: Making a safe, prompt stop at 20mph when instructed.

  • Backing Up: Reversing in a controlled manner for 50 feet, while looking over your right shoulder.

  • Signaling and Turning: Correctly timed signals and turns.

  • Passing: Safely passing other vehicles.

  • Following Distance: Maintaining a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

  • Regular Mirror Checks: Awareness of bikes and pedestrians included.

Test Day Protocol

You should aim to arrive at your chosen testing center at least 15 minutes before your appointment, bringing with you a licensed driver. Your examiner will verify your vehicle's registration and insurance, conduct a quick safety check, and then you can proceed with your road test which will last around 15 minutes.

Passing the Knowledge Test

The knowledge test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and covers Tennessee driving laws, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. You are required to score a minimum of 80% (24 correct answers) to pass.

Online

If you are aged 15 to 17, you can take the knowledge test online if supervised by a parent or legal guardian. You will need to complete it within 60 minutes, and have a maximum of 2 chances to pass.
