Actually, in some cases, yes - there is an option for a Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit for some applicants over 17, which allows them to bypass the road skills test under certain conditions.
Mississippi Driving Information
Permit & License Eligibility / Requirements
Learner’s Permit Minimum Age: You must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in school to get your Regular Learner’s Permit.
Permit Validity: Valid for 2 years, with a fee of $7.00.
Holding Period: If you are under 17, you must hold the Learner’s Permit for 12 months before you may apply for a Regular Class R driver’s license.
Note: Applicants 17 years or older do not have to hold the permit for 12 months; they can receive both permit and license the same day, after taking the tests.
Documents & Exams
Required Documents:
Original/certified birth certificate (no copies).
Social Security Number or other valid official document with full 9-digit number.
Two proofs of your Mississippi residency.
If using a name change - legal documents.
School attendance form - 15 to 17 year-olds in school must submit a school attendance form no older than 30 days.
Testing Requirements:
You must pass your written (knowledge) test and a vision screening test to obtain your Learner’s Permit.
For those wanting a Regular Class R license, who are under 17, additional items will include: valid learner’s permit, up-to-date school attendance form, and a signed Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit.
License Issuance & No Road Test (In Some Cases)
Class R details: the minimum age is 16 years old, but to qualify, under-17 applicants must satisfy the permit holding period of 12 months, or until they turn 17.
A “Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit” is available, meaning in some cases, the standard road test can be waived, particularly for those over 17.
Teen / Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Restrictions & Curfews
Curfew for Newly Licensed (under 17): For 6 months after getting your license or until turning 17, you may not drive unsupervised during nighttime hours.
Typically this is 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 11:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Friday-Saturday.
Texting / Cellphone Use: Learner permit or intermediate license holders are subject to restrictions on use of cell phones/texting while driving.
