Keeping Up to Date

The last thing you want is to follow a route that no longer matches what examiners actually use.

Idaho roads can change quickly - from new stop signs to construction detours.

That’s why our routes aren’t static. We:

  1. Listen to learners and instructors who notice changes first.

  2. Check GPS recordings from real test days to confirm directions.

  3. Refresh the app right away - what you practice today is what you’ll drive on the test.

For you, that means no wasted time - giving you the best shot at feeling confident on test day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Having a backup camera doesn’t hurt - and you can use it as extra help... but don’t rely on it alone.

You’ll still be expected to physically look over your shoulder, check your mirrors, and use your rear view when backing up.

  • You’ll need to show that your vehicle is safe and road-legal.

The examiner will check things like your headlights, turn signals, horn, brakes, emergency/parking brake, windshield wipers, seat belts, mirrors, and confirm the registration and insurance are both valid.

  • The skills test typically lasts about 30 minutes including a vehicle inspection and the driving portion. How long you’re actually driving will depend on the traffic, the specific test route, and the number of maneuvers.

    1. Straight backing up and parking lot backing maneuvers.

    2. Turns (left, right, maybe U-turns), with proper signaling.

    3. Driving safely through residential areas, intersections, and possibly highway or busier roads.

    4. Observing right-of-ways, stop signs, and traffic lights.

  • If you commit a critical driving error (CDE), the test ends right away and the result is a fail.

Disobeying traffic signals or stop signs, driving dangerously, running into a curb hard, or any action that risks safety are serious enough to stop the test.

    1. Your learner’s permit (if required) or proof of eligibility.

    2. Valid registration and insurance for the car you’ll be using.

    3. Something that proves your identity and proof of Idaho residence. If you’re under 18, you may need documentation of school compliance or parent/guardian info.

  • In most cases, no. There are exceptions: a parent, guardian, law enforcement, or a translator may be allowed under certain conditions (and will often have to sign a waiver).

Further Driving Information

Your Permit & Driver Training

When you’re under 17, Idaho requires you to complete a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program. That means you’ll undertake driver education (classroom, behind-the-wheel, and observation) and a supervised instruction period.

GDL Requirements

Driver training includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours behind the wheel, and 6 hours observing. Once that’s done, you’ll get your supervised instruction permit (SIP).

Supervised Driving Time & Minor Restrictions

After you finish driver training, you’ll need:

  • At least 6 calendar months of supervised driving where someone 21 or older with a valid license sits in the passenger seat next to you.

  • To log 50 hours of driving, 10 of those at night, before you can apply for a full license (when all other requirements are met).

Note: While you’re under 16, you’ll be limited to driving in daylight hours only, unless a licensed driver over 21 is present.

If you’ve had your license, but are still under 17, there’s a restriction for the first six months: you may only carry one passenger under the age of 17 who isn’t a family member.

What You’ll Need

You’ll need to pass both the knowledge test (written) and the road skills test.

You’ve then got to show proof you completed your driver training and supervised driving (50 hours etc.) with your parent or guardian verifying this.

Your parent or legal guardian must then sign a verification that you’ve met the GDL requirements before you can get your license.

Other Idaho Driving Rules & Facts

Vision Test

Your vision must be tested; if you need glasses or contacts, your license will have a lens restriction. That means that you’ll need to wear your corrective lenses when driving.

Other State Licenses

If you’ve moved to Idaho, with a valid license from another state, you can keep driving while you apply for an Idaho license - usually within a 30 day period.

Expiration

Permits and driver training permits have an expiration date. For example, if you’re 14½-17½, the driver training permit expires shortly after you turn 18; if you’re older (over 17½) the permit lasts for 180 days.
