North Carolina Driving Test Information
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) operates testing centers across the state, from Birmingham and Huntsville to smaller cities and rural areas.
They handle learner’s permits, road tests, and driver license issuance, while also providing helpful resources and support for all new drivers working toward their license.
Alabama's Graduated Licensing System
If you’re under 18, you’ll need to follow Alabama’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) system, designed to give you real-world driving experience, in safer stages.
It starts with a learner’s permit after you turn 15 years old. You’ll need to pass your written knowledge test first (based on the Alabama Driver Manual).
Once you have your permit, you’re allowed to drive, but only with a licensed adult who’s at least 21 years old (sitting in the front passenger seat).
After holding your permit for a minimum of 6 months, and if you’re at least 16 years old, you can take the road test to earn a Stage II (Restricted) license.
Eventually, once you’ve gained enough experience and meet the age requirement, you can move on to the Stage III (Unrestricted) license, granting you full driving privileges.
What You’ll Need
Before you head to your appointment, ensure that you bring:
Your learner’s permit
A roadworthy vehicle that’s properly registered and insured
Proof of liability insurance
A licensed adult driver to accompany you
Driving Laws
Young drivers: If you’re under 18 and have a restricted license, you are not permitted to drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless for work, school, or with a parent.
Seat belts: Everyone in the vehicle, including the driver, must wear a seat belt at all times. If you forget to buckle up during your road test, it’s an automatic fail.
Right-of-way: Understand who has priority at intersections, four-way stops, and when merging.
What Happens If I Don’t Pass?
It’s not the end of the world if you fail the road test. You’ll receive immediate feedback on what went wrong, what needs improvement, and are allowed to reschedule quickly, often within just a few days.
Booking Your Road Test
Alabama road tests are conducted at ALEA (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) offices and authorized testing centers. Your appointment must be scheduled in advance, and most offices allow you to book online through the ALEA website.
