Frequently Asked Questions
-
Scheduling your test is simple and must be done in advance as walk-ins aren’t accepted.
You can book your appointment through the Maryland MVA website, where you’ll choose your preferred location and time. It’s a good idea to schedule early, especially during busy months like summer.

Yes, you’ll need to use your own vehicle for the test, and it must be safe and legal. Your vehicle must:
Have valid registration and insurance.

Have no windshield cracks obstructing the view.
Have doors that open and close properly.
Be clean and free of safety hazards.
-
The Maryland road test includes both closed-course and public road components.
You’ll begin with a vehicle safety check, then perform a reverse two-point turn that tests your control and awareness.
You’ll then drive on public roads where you’ll need to demonstrate safe lane changes, turning, stopping, and obeying traffic signs.
Note: Parallel parking is not required on the test.
-
Yes, backup cameras are allowed in Maryland. However, you’re expected to use traditional methods as well - like checking your mirrors and looking over your shoulder.
-
Disobeying traffic signs or signals.
Speeding or driving too slowly.
Failing to yield the right-of-way.
Involvement in an accident.
Accumulating too many minor errors.
-

-
This is a must-have resource provided by the Maryland MVA. It includes a detailed logbook where you track your supervised driving hours and practise essential driving skills.
Maryland Driving Test Information & Resources
The Test Begins in a Controlled Lot
Unlike some states, the Maryland driving skills test starts in an off-road testing area where you’ll be asked to perform maneuvers such as a reverse two-point turn.
Work Zones Carry Higher Penalties
Fines for speeding in a work zone can double - even if workers aren’t present. This is something learners are often unaware of, but it can come up on your test route, especially near urban test centers.
School Buses Must Be Obeyed, No Exceptions
You must stop for school buses with flashing red lights on both sides of undivided roads. This includes stopping behind or approaching from the opposite direction unless a median or barrier separates traffic.
Hands-Free Is the Law
Drivers of all ages, including permit holders, must use hands-free devices if they need to use a phone while driving.
Curfew Rules
If you're under 18 and hold a learner's permit or provisional license, you're not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless with a qualified supervising driver or traveling for employment, school, or volunteer work.
Parking on Hills: Wheel Position Matters
Maryland examiners may check whether you position your wheels correctly when parking on a hill. Always turn your wheels away from the curb when uphill with a curb, and toward the curb when downhill.
Wipers = Headlights
In Maryland, it’s the law: if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights must be on too.
Pedestrian Right-of-Way
Examiners watch closely to see if you yield to pedestrians - especially at crosswalks.
