Indiana Driving Test Routes (IN)

You can schedule online through your myBMV account.

Your appointment must be made at least 48 hours in advance and can be scheduled anywhere up to three weeks ahead.

If you're unable to book online (if your learner’s permit has expired or you’re a foreign national without a Social Security number), simply call the BMV Contact Center at 888-692-6841 for further assistance.

You'll need:

• A valid Indiana learner’s permit

• Completed Supervised Driving Log (if under 18)

• Proof of driver education completion (if applicable)

• A parent or guardian to sign the financial responsibility agreement (if you're under 18)

• A vehicle that meetsl the safety and registration requirements

You must use a legally registered and insured vehicle that will need to pass a quick safety inspection before the test.

That means working lights and turn signals, properly functioning seat belts, clear windows, and no dashboard warning lights. Try to make sure the car is clean and tidy too... examiners appreciate that.

The exam assesses your ability to:

• Drive in the proper lane and obey lane markings

• Maintain safe following distances

• Control your speed according to posted limits and traffic conditions

• Demonstrate defensive driving habits

• Properly approach and navigate intersections

• Use mirrors and check blind spots when backing up

• Safely park and perform maneuvers

Mistakes happen, but some are serious enough to end the test immediately:

1. Running a red light or stop sign

2. Speeding or driving too fast for conditions

3. Hitting the curb hard while backing

4. Failing to yield or causing another driver to react suddenly

5. Disobeying the examiner’s instructions

6. Causing an accident

If things don’t go your way, you’ll need to wait 7 days before taking another test.

After three failed attempts, there’s a required 60-day wait during which you have additional time to practice.

Be sure your learner’s permit is still valid when you return - if not, you may need to retake the written knowledge test.

Yes, some Indiana certified driver training schools are authorised to carry out the driving skills test.

If you’ve completed a BMV-approved driver’s ed course and you're at least 16 years and 90 days old, you may be eligible to take your test through a school instead of at the BMV.

If you’re under 18 and enrolled in driver’s ed, you can drive with a licensed instructor, a licensed relative aged 25 or older, or your spouse if they’re at least 21.

If you’re over 18, any licensed adult over 25 (or your spouse aged 21+) can ride along.

The knowledge exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections:

• 34 questions on traffic maneuvers and safe driving techniques

• 16 questions on traffic signs and signals

You must score at least 80% on each section to pass.
