Frequently Asked Questions

  • You need to be at least 15½ years old to apply.

  • You’ll need to bring your proof of identity, Social Security number, Nevada residential address, and pass both your vision and written knowledge tests.

If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must sign a financial responsibility statement.

  • The knowledge test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, and you must score 80% to pass.

  • If you're under 18 you must complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice, with at least 10 hours at night.

These must be logged with the official Nevada DMV log (Beginning Driver Experience Log / DLD-130) or the RoadReady app.

  • For the first six months the restrictions are:

    • No driving between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless for school or work.

    • No transporting passengers under 18 other than siblings.

  • If you fail, don't worry, you will just need to schedule another test, and there may be a waiting period or retest fee.

  • To qualify for a full intermediate license, you must have a clean record: no at-fault crashes, no moving violations, and no alcohol or drug convictions in your six months before applying.

NV Driving Test Information

If you’re preparing for your driving skills test, this section will help you prepare.

Eligibility & Permit Requirements

  • Minimum age for Learner (Instruction) Permit: 15½ years old.

  • Proof required: Identity, Social Security Number, Nevada residential address. If you’re under 18, a parent or legal guardian will need to sign a financial responsibility statement. You may also need proof of school attendance.

  • Vision & Written Tests: You are required to pass both a vision and a written (knowledge) test.

Driver Education & Practice Hours

  • Under 18: most beginners will need to complete a driver education course (online or classroom).

  • Behind-the-wheel (supervised driving practice): you will need at least 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of which must be logged at night.

  • Note: If there are no driver educational resources within 30 miles (and online isn’t an option), an alternative requirement of 100 hours of supervised driving experience is possible.

Holding a Period & Clean Driving Record

If you’re under 18 you must hold your instruction permit for a minimum of six months before taking the driving skills test.

When applying for your full (minor) license, you must have maintained a clean driving record during the permit period: with no at-fault crashes, no moving violations, and no alcohol or drug convictions for the previous six months.

Skills Test & Vehicle Requirements

On the day of your test, bring:

  1. Your instruction permit

  2. Proof of identity and residency

  3. Driver education certificate (if required)

  4. The log of the required behind-the-wheel practice (either via the RoadReady app or the official log form DLD-130).

Your vehicle must be registered, insured, and meet all outlined safety requirements. Your examiner will perform a safety inspection before the skills test.

Restrictions & Graduated Licensing for Teens

  • Passenger restrictions: For the first 6 months after obtaining a minor license, teen drivers may not transport passengers under 18, except for immediate family members.

  • Night-driving curfew: Teen drivers under 18 may not drive between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless it’s for school, work, or a scheduled event.

  • Zero tolerance for alcohol: Any alcohol or drug conviction, or detectable alcohol in the system for drivers under 21, can affect licensing.
