Schedule your Connecticut road test online through the DMV website or by phone. Appointments are required as walk-ins are not accepted.

The driving part of the test usually lasts about 15–20 minutes, depending on the current traffic and which route chosen by your examiner on the day.

Your learner’s permit, a registered and insured vehicle (in safe working order), and proof of driver’s education if you’re under 18 will be required.

Any car that is legally registered, insured, and safe to drive. The examiner will check the brake lights, indicators, horn, mirrors, seatbelts, and windshield before your test can begin.

Most of the road test routes in Connecticut focus on the local streets and main roads, not on highways. There is however a chance you may be asked to merge onto a busier road or handle higher-speed traffic at some point during the drive.

There’s no maximum number of minor mistakes allowed. You’ll pass if you show safe and confident driving.
Serious errors like running a stop sign, speeding, or unsafe lane changes will result in you failing automatically.

You will need to wait 14 days before rescheduling another test.
If you’re under 18, you’ll need a parent or guardian’s signature in order to book again.
Connecticut Test Information
Learner’s Permit Rules
In order to take your driving test, you must first hold a learner’s permit.
If you’re under 18, you must have completed 40 hours of on-the-road practice driving and a driver’s education course before booking your road test.
Learners under 18 must hold a permit for a minimum of 120 days provided they’ve completed driver education, or 180 days without it.
Connecticut Road Test Requirements
On the day of your test, you’ll need to bring:
A registered and insured vehicle in safe operating condition.
Your learner’s permit.
Proof of driver’s education (if under 18).
The test itself usually covers:
Starting and stopping safely.
Turning at intersections.
Backing up and reversing in a straight line.
Parking on a hill.
Obeying stop signs and traffic lights.
Connecticut Driving Laws Worth Remembering
Seatbelts: A requirement at all times for drivers and passengers.
Passengers: Drivers under 18 are not permitted to have more than one passenger in the car for the first six months of driving (excluding parents, guardians, or instructors).
Mobile phones: Handheld use is prohibited. If you’re under 18 you may not use any electronic device while driving, even if hands-free.
Right turns on red: Unless a sign prohibits it these are allowed, but you still need to come to a complete stop and yield to traffic and pedestrians.
Move Over Law: It is a requirement to slow down and move over when emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or highway workers approach with flashing lights.
