North Carolina Driving Test Information

In South Carolina, driving tests are conducted at SCDMV (South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles) offices, which handle everything from issuing learner’s permits to conducting road tests and processing full driver’s licenses. They also provide additional services like vehicle registration, license renewals, and written permit exams.

The Beginner’s Permit is Your First Step

Before taking the road test, to get your beginner's permit you must first pass a written knowledge test and take a vision test. You can apply as early as 15 years old, and once successful, can practice driving with a licensed adult (who is at least 21 years old and has at least one year of driving experience).

The Road Test is Only One Part of the Process

To qualify for a full license, drivers under the age of 17 must complete the Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program. This requires holding a beginner’s permit for a mminimum of six months before taking the road test. If you’re 18 or older, you can apply as soon as you feel ready.

South Carolina Does NOT Require a Formal Driver’s Ed Course

Unlike some other states, SC does not require you to take a certified driver’s education course in order to get your license. If you are under 17 and have completed a state-approved Driver’s Ed program and undertaken at least 40 hours of supervised driving practice, you could be eligible to waive the road test.

Speeding... Even a Little... Can Fail You

Driving over the speed limit, even by just a few miles per hour, can cause you to fail immediately. SC instructors report this as one of the main reasons for failure during tests.

You Can Fail for Going Too Slow

Driving too far under the speed limit can also result in a fail as holding up traffic unnecessarily can be considered unsafe driving.

Night Driving

If you’re under 17, even after passing your road test, you are still subject to nighttime driving restrictions:

  • Until you turn 16.5, you must not drive alone between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

  • After 16.5, you must not drive alone between midnight and 6:00 AM (unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 21).

The Road Test Lasts About 10-15 Minutes

South Carolina’s driving tests are relatively short compared to other states, any typically last between 10 and 15 minutes.

Failing Isn't the End—You Can Retake!

Should you fail your road test first time, don’t worry! You’ll have to wait two business days before taking it again. If you fail a second time, you’ll need to wait seven days, and if you fail three or more times you need to wait 30 days.
