Always Up to Date

Driving current, accurate routes can make all the difference on test day:

  • Accuracy as Standard: Each route is built using recorded GPS tracking from recent tests, examiner feedback, and the reviewing of test-day footage. You’re practicing the same roads and turns that MVC examiners use.

  • Updated Regularly, Included Free: Traffic patterns change. Construction pops up. Routes get adjusted. Our team continuously monitors and updates each route - at no extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The road tests in NJ are conducted at designated Motor Vehicle Commission road test sites, and not at standard MVC offices. They are set up specifically for practical driving exams, often with a combination of both closed-course and on-road testing.

  • No, the standard New Jersey road test does not include a highway driving element, focusing on local roads around your chosen MVC test site.

  • The test itself is relatively short, and most complete it within 10 to 15 minutes. During that short time, examiners will assess your ability to drive safely and confidently in a variety of situations.

  • You’ll be evaluated on your ability to:

    1. Start and stop smoothly

    2. Make left and right turns

    3. Use proper signals and check blind spots

    4. Reverse in a straight line

    5. Parallel park

    6. Complete a 3-point turn

    7. Obey road signs and markings

    8. Interact safely with other road users

  • Yes! Unlike some other states, parallel parking is currently a requirement, and it’s one of the most common places drivers lose points.

  • You are allowed to use your backup camera, but it shouldn’t be relied upon. Examiners will expect you to use your mirrors and physically look over your shoulder when reversing.

    • Rolling stops or not stopping fully

    • Poor lane control or drifting

    • Not checking mirrors or blind spots

    • Failing to yield or obey signs

    • Hesitating or driving too slowly

    • Trouble with parallel parking

  • Yes. All road tests must be scheduled in advance through the NJ MVC website.

  • If you don’t pass, don’t worry - you can reschedule online. You will however need to wait at least two weeks before trying again, which gives you enough time to practice any weaker areas of your driving.

New Jersey Driving Information

The NJ Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program

New Jersey's GDL program has been developed to provide all new drivers with the experience and skills required to drive safely on public roads.

  • Special Learner's Permit (Age 16): Available through high school or licensed driving schools, this permit requires you to complete a driver education course and pass both the knowledge and vision tests before progressing.

  • Examination Permit (Age 17+): Suitable if you're not enrolled in a driver education course. This also requires you to pass the knowledge and vision test.

  • Probationary License: Once you have a permit and complete the required supervised driving period (6 months for under 21, 3 months for over 21), you are able to take the road test, resulting in your probationary license.

  • Basic Driver License: You can upgrade to this license after one year of unsupervised driving with a probationary license.

What to Bring on Test Day

In order for your test to take place, ensure you have the following:

  1. Valid examination permit

  2. 6 Points of ID verification

  3. A registered vehicle with a current inspection sticker and valid insurance card

  4. An accompanying New Jersey licensed driver, who needs to be at least 21 years old, and has held a license for a minimum of 3 years

  5. Red, reflective decals (for drivers under 21)

Note: Rental cars can be used for the road test, if the driver taking the test is included on the rental contract as an additional driver.

Vehicle Requirements

Your test will be denied if the vehicle used:

  • Has an improper, expired, or no inspection sticker

  • Has equipment that prevents the examiner from reaching the foot or parking brakes

  • Is a self-parking vehicle

  • Has defects affecting safe operation (e.g. poor brakes, worn tires)

  • Lacks the required license plate decals

  • Has tinted windows
