Frequently Asked Questions

  • On the day of your test you will need to bring your valid instruction permit, a vehicle in good working condition (with valid registration and insurance), and if you're under 18 a parent or legal guardian to accompany you. You also need to ensure all documents are originals or certified copies.

  • Prior to the test, your vehicle will be inspected, so ensure that it:

    • Is in good working condition with functioning brakes, lights, turn signals, and safety features.

    • Has valid registration and current liability insurance (out-of-country insurance isn't acceptable).

    • Is equipped with working seat belts for all occupants.

    • Has air conditioning (June 1st through September 22nd after 12 o'clock).

  • The practical test assesses your ability to handle various traffic situations:

    1. Starting and stopping the vehicle safely and smoothly.

    2. Accelerating and braking in a controlled manner.

    3. Making safe turns and signaling appropriately.

    4. Changing lanes safely with proper signaling.

    5. Maintaining a safe following distance.

    6. Controlling your speed as dictated by the road conditions.

    7. Parking, including parallel parking and parking on a hill.

    8. Backing up safely (while observing your surroundings).

    9. Navigating intersections whilst obeying traffic signals.

    10. Observing potential hazards.

  • Points are assigned as follows:... accumulating 21 points or more will result in a fail:

    • 1-point:Poor basic safety knowledge, such as locating the speedometer or demonstrating appropriate hand signals.

    • 4-points: Errors such as not wearing a seatbelt, changing lanes erratically, or braking exessively.

    • 10-points: Serious infractions like failing to fully stop at stop signs/lights, failing to give way to other road users, or speeding (5-9 MPH over the limit).

  • Yes, you can use your backup camera, but it cannot be your primary focus. You cannot rely solely on the camera screen and will have to demonstrate good observational skills whilst reversing.

  • Yes, Arizona has a Graduated Driver License (Class G) for drivers under 18:

For the first 6 months, you are unable to drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Exceptions to this include driving to/from a school-sponsored activity, a place of employment, a religious activity, or in the event of a family emergency.

During this probationary period, you are unable to have more than one passenger under the age of 18 in the vehicle, unless they are your siblings, or you're accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

    • Accumulating 21 or more points due to numerous, repeated infractions.

    • Committing a serious violation like speeding, or not stopping at red lights.

    • Unsafe driving or lack of vehicle control.

  • In the even you don't pass your practical test, try to do the following:

    1. Revisit the areas where you lost points, and try to improve in these areas.

    2. Practice, practice, practice... use the time you have between tests to further your confidence and skills.

    3. Re-book the test for as soon as possible. Only one road test per customer per day is allowed.

Arizona Driving Test Information

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) oversees driver's license testing and vehicle services in Arizona. You can also take your road test at MVD offices or Authorized Third Party (ATP) providers, which are private entities approved by the MVD to offer services like driver's license testing, vehicle registration, and title transfers. By doing this you can often experience shorter waiting times and more convenient opening hours.

The Test is in Two Parts

Before you even get to the practical driving portion, you’ll need have passed a written test covering Arizona’s road rules and traffic signs. It consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and you’ll need a score of at least 80% to pass.

The Test Route is Now Longer

Arizona recently updated its road test to make it more realistic, so instead of just driving around a small block, the route now takes about 15-20 minutes and covers five to eight miles.

If You Fail - You Can Try Again

Not everyone passes on their first attempt, and that’s okay! If you don’t pass, take time to practice the areas you struggled with before booking a retest. Arizona allows one road test per day, so you won’t be able to retake it immediately.

Driver Education and Practice Requirements

If you're under 18, you are required to complete 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night, before you can take your road test. As an alternative, if you complete a state-approved driver education program, you're only required to complete 20 hours of supervised driving practice (6 hours at night).

Instruction Permit Validity

Your learner's permit is valid for 12 months from the date issued. If it expires before you obtain your driver's license, you'll need to renew it by passing the written test again.

Arizona's 'Left Lane' Law

The left lane on multi-lane highways is used primarily for passing other drivers. You are required to travel faster than traffic in the right lane, and should return to the right lane as soon as safely possible.
