Frequently Asked Questions

  • The BOST is a required behind-the-wheel driving test taken in Colorado.

It assesses your ability to operate a vehicle safely, and evaluates turning, stopping, backing up, parking and more.

You can take the BOST at a state-approved third-party testing center or through certain driving schools.

  • Backup cameras are allowed, but you should not rely solely on them.

Examiners will expect you to check both mirrors and look over your shoulder while reversing.

  • Yes, if you're under 18, you must have:

    1. Held your instruction permit for at least 12 months.

    2. Completed 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.

    3. Completed a 6-hour behind-the-wheel training session with a certified instructor.

    • Your valid Colorado instruction permit.

    • Proof of identity and age.

    • Proof of Colorado residency.

    • Proof of Social Security number.

    • Payment for applicable fees.

Important: Ensure all documents you bring are current and originals, not photocopies.

  • The vehicle you use must:

    • Be in good working condition with functioning lights, brakes, and signals.

    • Have valid registration and insurance.

    • Not have any warning lights on the dashboard.

  • The CO driving test typically lasts about 30 minutes, but you should allocate a little extra time for check-in and post-test briefing and paperwork.

  • If you fail, you can retake the test. You may need to wait a while before retesting, and additional fees may apply. While waiting, use the feedback from your examiner to focus on any areas that need improvement.

  • Yes, there are restrictions aimed at reducing distractions and promoting safe driving habits for the first year. If you're under 18:

    • You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 21 or for specific purposes like work or school.

    • First six months: no passengers under 21 allowed unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 21.

    • Next six months: one passenger under 21 is allowed.

  • Colorado uses a point system to track traffic violations.

For drivers under 18, accumulating 6 points within 12 months can lead to license suspension.

Points remain on your record for 7 years, so it's important to drive responsibly at all times.

  • Yes, there is an online option for the written permit test through approved providers.

You will need to ensure you meet all eligibility requirements and have the necessary technology setup before attempting the online test.

Colorado Driving Test Information & Resources

Third-Party Centers

Unlike some other states, many Colorado drivers complete their road test at approved third-party driving schools. These providers follow the same rules as the DMV, but the testing route may vary slightly.

Stop Means Stop

Colorado examiners are very strict on rolling stops at stop signs. Your vehicle must come to a complete stop behind the white line, and you must yield appropriately before proceeding.

Left Lane Law

Colorado law requires slower drivers to stay in the right lane unless passing. This applies on highways and some multi-lane roads. Driving in the left lane without overtaking can result in a ticket, and could count as an error on your driving test.

Mountain Driving

Even if your driving test isn’t in the mountains, you’re expected to understand how to control your vehicle on slopes - especially using lower gears when going downhill and maintaining a safe speed on curves.

Weather Can Shift in Minutes

Be prepared to drive in wet, icy, or foggy conditions, especially in fall and winter. If your road test happens during poor weather, you'll be assessed on how well you adjust: slowing down, turning on headlights, increasing following distance, and avoiding abrupt movements.

Chain Laws and Tire Traction Awareness

While not tested directly, Colorado's traction laws are important to understand - especially if you plan to drive west of Denver. From September to May, certain highways may require vehicles to have snow-rated tires or chains.

School Zones

Most school zones in Colorado are enforced with flashing yellow lights, which let you know the lower speed limit (typically 20 mph) is active.
