Learning to Drive in Alaska: Your Guide
Here’s what the learner journey looks like in Alaska:
1. Getting Your Instruction Permit
When can you start?
You can get an instruction permit starting at 14 years old, so you can begin practicing driving under supervision.
What’s required?
To start your application process, you need to:
Visit your nearest DMV office and complete Form D1.
Take and pass the written knowledge test (you can practice online via Alaska’s “KnowToDrive”).
Pass a vision test to identify if visual correction needs to be worn when driving.
Provide proof of your identity, lawful presence, name, AK residence, Social Security (or equivalent) - and if you’re under 18, get parental consent (Form 433).
Pay the permit fee, which is usually $15.
Permit duration & renewal
Your instruction permit will be valid for two years, and you have the chance to renew it one time if needed.
Driving under a permit
While you drive with your permit, you will need to be accompanied in the passenger seat by a licensed driver of at least 21 years old, who has had at least one year of driving experience.
2. From Permit to Provisional License
When can you upgrade?
Once you turn 16 years old, you can apply for a provisional license, but only if you’ve held your instruction permit for at least six months and during that time have maintained a clean driving record.
Additional requirements
As part of that upgrade, you must:
Pass the road test.
Demonstrate enough driving experience - for many that totals 40 hours of driving with 10 of those hours at night.
Avoid any traffic violations or license suspensions for six months.
Provisional license restrictions
While holding a provisional license (ages 16–17):
You are not permitted to drive between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless accompanied by a qualifying supervising driver or traveling to or from a place of employment.
Passengers under 21 are restricted unless they are siblings or a supervising adult is present.
Provisional length
You need to keep your provisional license for at least six months without any violations before you can progress to your full license.
3. Taking the Road Test
Scheduling & preparing
You can schedule your road test online via the DMV’s scheduling tool. The road test is nonrefundable (if you don’t make your appointment) but can be rescheduled 24 hours in advance for free.
What you must bring on test day
Your valid instruction permit
Corrective lenses if your vision test identified the need
Valid insurance and registration for your chosen vehicle
If you’re under 18: parental consent or notarized consent form
Vehicle requirements
Your car must be in safe working order for the test to go ahead:
All lights, blinker and brake systems must work
Mirrors, windshield, horn, wipers, defroster
Valid registration & plates
Seat belts for both you and the examiner
Enough fuel to last a 30-minute exam (more than enough for a 5 minute test)
What the test includes
You will be evaluated on real-world driving skills like:
Turning, lane use, intersections
Backing, parallel parking
Entering/exiting highways (if applicable in your area)
Use of mirrors, observing traffic rules
Speed control, stops, observation & safe driving practices
Your test may also include a “quick stop” on command
4. After You Pass - Full License
Once you’ve passed your road test and met all provisional requirements, you’ll receive your full Class D license. This may happen after you turn 18 or have completed the provisional stage without violation.
Note: Your license (if yo'u’re under 21) may expire 90 days after your 21st birthday.
5. Tips & Advice
Read the Alaska Driver’s Manual carefully - many test questions are sourced directly from it.
Practice in all conditions - snow, rain, darkness, highways, rural roads. Alaska’s weather cant be predicted on test day.
Don’t rush - space out your practice over months to help gradually build confidence.
Stay clean - traffic violations, suspensions, and driving infractions will delay your ability progress your license.
Schedule early - many AK DMV locations are busy, and have limited road test slots, so book your test in advance.
