Frequently Asked Questions

  • Typically around 15 to 25 minutes for the driving part, depending on traffic and whether it’s your first attempt.

You should plan to be at the test center for at least an hour to allow for paperwork, vehicle checks, and post-test feedback.

  • If you're under 18, you must:

    • Be at least 16 years old

    • Have completed 30 hours of classroom instruction

    • Have completed 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training

    • Held your instruction permit for at least six months without any violations

    • Have completed a supervised driving log with 50 hours of practice, including 15 hours at night

If you're 18 or older, you need to have held your instruction permit for at least three months before taking the road test.

  • Yes, unofficially.

Learners often report that some locations have trickier intersections, more pedestrian traffic, or tight parallel parking spaces. For example, testing in downtown locations or busy suburbs may feel more intense than in smaller towns.

  • Bring your valid instruction permit, proof of identity, and proof of your Social Security number.

If you're under 18, you'll also need to bring your completed and signed driving log, your certificate of course completion, and a parent or guardian to sign your application.

  • Your vehicle must be in good working condition with functioning lights, brakes, turn signals, seat belts, and doors. It must also have valid registration and insurance.

Note: parking assist cannot be used when performing parallel parking.

  • If something is defective, like a burned-out headlight or cracked windshield, your test will be cancelled immediately and will need to be rescheduled.

  • Yes, but you must be listed as a driver on the rental agreement, and the vehicle must meet all the necessary requirements.

  • Many learners struggle with the 90-degree backing maneuver, which is a requirement in most test centers.

Others lose points for incomplete stops at stop signs, poor observation before lane changes, or not using turn signals properly.

  • You'll be evaluated on your ability to:

    1. Control the vehicle

    2. Parallel park

    3. Park on a hill

    4. Respond to traffic and road conditions

    5. Signal and perform right and left turns properly

    6. Use both marked and unmarked lanes of traffic

    7. Observe and consider pedestrians and other drivers

    8. Perform a 90-degree backing skill maneuver

  • Disobeying traffic laws, dangerous or reckless driving, inability to control the vehicle, involvement in a crash that could have been avoided, not cooperating with the examiner, or refusing to perform a maneuver can result in immediate failure of your road test.

Minnesota Driving Information & Resources

Winter Driving

Drivers are expected to adapt quickly to snowy roads, black ice, and poor visibility. While your driving test won’t happen in a blizzard, your examiner will expect you to know basic safety practices: increase following distance, reduce speed early, and use gentle steering and braking in colder conditions.

Headlights On with Wipers

In Minnesota, if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights must be on too. This is a law, not just a good habit. Forgetting this could result in a road test points deduction.

All Crosswalks Require a Stop

Minnesota law requires you to stop for pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks. During your road test, your examiner will observe whether you’re scanning and yielding appropriately, even with no pedestrians present.

Cell Phone Use is Banned

For all drivers, especially those on a permit or under a provisional license, handheld phone use while driving is strictly prohibited.

Left Turns at Traffic Signals

Examiners often assess how well you handle left turns across traffic, especially at intersections with green lights (not arrows). You’re expected to pull into the intersection, wait with your wheels straight, and turn only when it’s safe and clear.

Resources

  • Official Minnesota Driver’s Manual

This should be your primary resource for road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. It provides detailed information on all driving laws and is useful for both the written knowledge test and the road test.

  • Scheduling Your Road Test

Schedule your road test appointment online through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's website. It's advisable to book in advance, as some locations may have long wait times.
